Where these numbers come from
  • Rishi Masala Chai, black tea (one sachet)USDA reference values

USDA FoodData Central 173227 — tea, black, brewed, prepared with tap water (20 mg caffeine per 100 g)

Per sachet: USDA's per-100 g brewed black tea × 237 g, the 8 fl oz cup Rishi brews from one 3 g sachet — about 47 mg of caffeine and 2 kcal. The sachet is black tea with cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, black pepper and clove, steeped 5 minutes, and Rishi publishes no milligram figure: it rates it "High" on its 0–100 mg-per-8 oz scale (https://www.rishi-tea.com/products/organic-masala-chai-teabag-sachets). So this is an estimate: the low end is our usual quarter-either-way brewing spread, the high end is the top of Rishi's scale.

Calculated from this recipe's ingredients and amounts (One sachet steeped 5 minutes in 8 fl oz of water at 200°F, as Rishi directs). Your drink will vary with the exact measures, brands and brew. Not a lab analysis, and not medical advice.

Why it works

Unlike our three botanical blends, Masala Chai is made with black tea, so it has caffeine: about 45 mg in an 8 oz cup by our estimate from USDA's figure for brewed black tea, and Rishi rates it high on its 0–100 mg scale. The spices — cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, black pepper and clove — are what make it chai, and they stand up well to milk.

Frequently asked
