- Kettle + steamed milk
Ingredients
- 1 sachet Rishi Masala Chai
- 4 fl oz (120 ml) water, heated to 200°F / 93°C
- 4 fl oz (120 ml) milk of your choice
- Optional: honey or sugar
Method
- 1
Steep the sachet in the hot water for 5 minutes.
- 2
While it steeps, steam or froth the milk until hot and silky.
- 3
Lift out the sachet and sweeten the tea if you like.
- 4
Pour in the milk, holding back the foam, then spoon the foam on top.
Best results: Sweeten the tea before the milk goes in: sugar and honey dissolve far better in the hot tea.

Where these numbers come from
- Rishi Masala Chai, black tea (one sachet)Our estimate
Per sachet: USDA's per-100 g brewed black tea × 237 g, the 8 fl oz cup Rishi brews from one 3 g sachet — about 47 mg of caffeine and 2 kcal. The sachet is black tea with cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, black pepper and clove, steeped 5 minutes, and Rishi publishes no milligram figure: it rates it "High" on its 0–100 mg-per-8 oz scale (https://www.rishi-tea.com/products/organic-masala-chai-teabag-sachets). So this is an estimate: the low end is our usual quarter-either-way brewing spread, the high end is the top of Rishi's scale.
- Whole milkUSDA reference values
Calculated from this recipe's ingredients and amounts (One sachet steeped 5 minutes in 4 fl oz of water at 200°F, topped with 4 fl oz of steamed milk). Your drink will vary with the exact measures, brands and brew. Not a lab analysis, and not medical advice.
Why it works
Most café chai lattes are made from a sweetened concentrate. This one is just brewed black tea and spices with milk, so you decide how sweet it is. Steeping the sachet in half the usual water makes the tea strong enough to hold its spice against the milk. It has about 45 mg of caffeine by our estimate, from the black tea.
Frequently asked
Which milk works best?
Whole milk steams the creamiest. Oat milk is the closest dairy-free match and its sweetness suits the spices.
How much caffeine is in a chai latte?
About 45 mg by our estimate, all from the black tea in one sachet. The milk adds none.
